2020 disability-rights report

In July 2020, the Alabama Disabilities Advocacy Program, the Southern Poverty Law Center, and Children's Rights sent a report to Alabama officials concerning Sequel facilities in the state. The letter said the Alabama Department of Mental Health certified Sequel Courtland and Sequel Owens Cross Roads, and it described resident interviews alleging physical abuse, unsafe living conditions, inadequate medical and psychiatric care, and educational neglect at Sequel Courtland (ADAP/SPLC/Children's Rights letter).

2020 lawsuit

A December 2020 civil complaint filed in Lawrence County, Alabama, identified Sequel TSI of Courtland as a psychiatric residential treatment facility and alleged that a minor referred to as Hunter C. experienced long-term physical, verbal, and emotional abuse while placed there. The lawsuit's allegations were later cited by the National Disability Rights Network in a national report on children placed in for-profit residential facilities (complaint copy, National Disability Rights Network).

2024 fire-safety dispute and removals

WAFF reported in May 2024 that juveniles were being removed from Brighter Path Courtland after the Courtland Fire Department found emergency exits blocked with lumber and plywood. The station also reported that Brighter Path, formerly known as Sequel, faced multiple lawsuits alleging abuse and neglect (WAFF).
