A 2016 East County Californian report described Sovereign Health of San Diego as an adolescent treatment facility that had opened its doors for public tours. Sovereign Health's Southern California operations drew regulatory, law-enforcement, and labor scrutiny in the late 2010s. NBC San Diego reported in 2016 on repeated teen runaways from the Rancho San Diego facility, and KGTV reported in 2019 that state labor officials ordered the East County treatment center to pay back wages (NBC San Diego, KGTV).
