Sexual-abuse litigation

In 2023, ABC News 4 reported on a lawsuit alleging that a teenager with special needs was sexually abused by an employee while enrolled at Whetstone Academy between 2018 and 2020. The lawsuit, as reported, alleged negligence and called for stronger oversight of therapeutic boarding schools (ABC News 4).

In 2025, Fox Carolina reported on a separate federal lawsuit alleging that Whetstone failed to protect a resident from sexual assault. The report characterized the case as an allegation against the boarding school and did not resolve the claims (Fox Carolina).
