2000 UHS ownership

Provo Canyon School's official site says the current ownership group took over in August 2000. UHS job listings identify the program as operated by a subsidiary of Universal Health Services, a King of Prussia, Pennsylvania-based health-care company (Provo Canyon School, UHS careers listing).

2020-2021 public testimony and Utah legislation

Paris Hilton publicly described abuse she said she experienced during an 11-month stay at Provo Canyon School when she was 17, including in the documentary This Is Paris and in testimony before Utah lawmakers. The Associated Press reported that Hilton testified in February 2021 in support of Utah legislation requiring more oversight and documentation of restraint use in youth residential treatment centers; Provo Canyon School said at the time that it was under new ownership and could not comment on events before the 2000 sale (Associated Press).

2024 Senate Finance Committee report

The U.S. Senate Finance Committee's 2024 staff report, Warehouses of Neglect, examined youth residential treatment facilities operated by four providers, including Universal Health Services. The report alleged systemic risks in the residential-treatment model; UHS responded that it disputed the report's framing and said its facilities provide behavioral health, academic, and life-skills services (Senate report, UHS response).

2026 Utah licensing actions

In July 2026, Utah DHHS revoked the license for Provo Canyon School's Springville campus, citing failures to protect the health and safety of patients and multiple alleged licensing violations. Reports said the Springville campus was ordered to end operations by August 6, 2026, while the Provo boys campus had been restricted from new admissions after a separate incident involving alleged delayed emergency medical care. Later July reporting said Utah officials had revoked licenses for both Provo Canyon School programs and that the school was appealing (Daily Herald, The Imprint, The Salt Lake Tribune).
