Long Creek has been the subject of recurring public debate over juvenile detention, staffing, and behavioral-health treatment in Maine. The ACLU of Maine has collected reports and news coverage arguing that the facility has been understaffed and ill-equipped for the mental-health needs of young residents (ACLU of Maine).

State and media coverage in the 2020s has continued to focus on safety, staffing, and the future of juvenile confinement in Maine. The facility nevertheless remains listed by the Maine Department of Corrections as the state's secure juvenile facility (Maine Department of Corrections).
