2001 Removal and Litigation

In October 2001, authorities removed 115 children from Heartland Christian Academy during an abuse investigation. The Deseret News, carrying Associated Press reporting, described the removal as following multiple abuse allegations at the rural Missouri school (Deseret News).

Heartland later prevailed in federal litigation over the raid. In 2005, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit affirmed injunctive and declaratory relief for Heartland Academy Community Church and CNS International Ministries in litigation against Missouri officials (Eighth Circuit opinion).

2021-2026 Oversight Litigation

In 2021, Heartland sued Missouri to block a new oversight law for unlicensed religious boarding schools, arguing that the law violated constitutional and federal rights. Courthouse News reported in January 2026 that CNS International Ministries, also known as Heartland, continued to challenge the law after a federal district judge dismissed the lawsuit in March 2025 for lack of standing (Missouri Independent, Courthouse News).
